Kibbie Resigns; Johnson Will Not Have To Run For Re-Election –

Date posted - February 3, 2012

Senator Jack Kibbie, a Democrat from Emmetsburg has tendered his resignation from the Iowa Senate, effective at the end of this session.

That could be good news for Senator David Johnson, a Republican from Ocheyedan. Johnson currently serves Osceola, O’Brien, Dickinson, Clay, and far eastern Sioux Counties.

Johnson lives in what will become the new Senate District number one, which will now include Lyon, Osceola, Dickinson, Clay, and Emmet Counties. (Lyon and Emmet are new) That would have put him up against Kibbie in the fall.

The law says if two senators live in the same district when redistricting happens, they have to face an election rather than serve the remainder of their terms. Kibbie’s resignation means Johnson won’t have to do that.

Sioux, O’Brien, and Cherokee Counties will be in another district — district 2.

Senator Randy Feenstra, a Hull Republican lives in the new district number 2, and there are no other state senators living in this district, so unless someone comes along and throws his or her hat in the ring, Feenstra will be unopposed in November.
