Sheldon, Iowa — The three Chairs of the KIDS Committee, an acronym for “Keep Improving District Schools”, of the Sheldon Community School District were honored for the committee’s successful campaign to pass a bond issue for the East Elementary Building/Remodel Project during Wednesday’s monthly School Board meeting.
Each of the three, Adam Besaw, Lisa Johnson and Lori Richards, was awarded a “Friends of Education” plaque by Superintendent Robin Spears. Also honored for their work on the project were Tami Van Meeteren, Angie Lickhart, Jennifer Van Beek, Kim Buenger, Jay Joersz and Amanda Noteboom, all East Elementary teachers who comprised the school’s “Building Leadership Team.”
In other business, the Board heard the report on the District’s independent audit, which was conducted by the State Auditor’s Office. The Auditor told the Board that this year the District received an “A” on their audit, as opposed to the “A-” they scored last year. Later in the meeting, the Board voted to designate the State Auditor’s Office as the District’s independent auditor for Fiscal Year 2013, as well.
Superintendent Spears told the Board that last week’s days off from school for the Boys State Basketball Tournament will be made up at the end of the school year, with the last day of classes set for May 29th. Since this extends the school year 2 days past Graduation, the Superintendent says that a way will be found for the seniors to make up the days prior to graduation.
Spears also told the Board that the East Elementary project is moving along. He said that after meetings with the architects, it was decided that bid letting should take place in August of this year, with work on the office area and kindergarten wing scheduled for completion by August, 2014. Work on the original wing is scheduled for summer of 2014, with work on the 4th grade wing scheduled for fall of 2014.
The Board accepted a pair of resignations from East Elementary office staff. Lori Cannoy and Debra Ten Clay have both resigned effective May 29th of this year.
The Board set April 10th at 6:30 pm, during their regular monthly meeting, as the date and time for the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Hearing And Certification. They also voted to renew the sharing agreement with South O’Brien for the wrestling program, approved a contract for soil testing services for the East Elementary project, and entered into a student teaching agreement with Buena Vista University, before adjourning into closed session to conduct a strategy meeting for contract negotiations with the union representing the District’s teachers.
