UPDATE with name of victim & driver – Little Rock Youth Loses Life After Being Struck By Pickup

Little Rock Iowa — We now know the identity of the Little Rock youngster who died after being struck by a pickup Monday near Little Rock, as well as that of the pickup’s driver.

Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep has confirmed to KIWA that the victim is 4-year-old Griffin Engelkes.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says at approximately 3:45 Monday afternoon their deputies were called to a pickup versus pedestrian accident in the 4500 block of 110th St, 3 miles north of Little Rock.

According to authorities, a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 77-year-old Harlan Klaassen of Little Rock was travelling westbound on 110th St,. approaching 2 UTV’s parked on the south side of the roadway. Klaassen told deputies he saw 2 adults working on a field tile in the south ditch and a young child standing behind the UTV’s, and slowed to approximately 5 to 10 mph. According to the report, as the pickup was passing the area where the UTV’s were parked, 4-year-old Griffin Engelkes stepped into the roadway from the ditch on the north side and was struck by the pickup. Griffin was taken to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, but succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities say Klaassen escaped injury in the accident.

Little Rock, Iowa — A rural Little Rock youth was fatally injured in an accident Monday afternoon near Little Rock.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says at approximately 3:45 Monday afternoon their deputies were called to a pickup versus pedestrian accident in the 4500 block of 110th St, 3 miles north of Little Rock.

According to authorities, a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by a 77-year-old Little Rock man was travelling westbound on 110th St,. approaching 2 UTV’s parked on the south side of the roadway. The driver told deputies he saw 2 adults working on a field tile in the south ditch and a young child standing behind the UTV’s, and slowed to approximately 5 to 10 mph. According to the report, as the pickup was passing the area where the UTV’s were parked, another young child stepped onto the roadway from the ditch on the north side and was struck by the pickup.  Deputies say the driver of the pickup was uninjured, but the young boy was taken by ambulance to Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley for treatment of life threatening injuries.

Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep said Tuesday morning that he has been told the child succumbed to his injuries.

The names of the driver and victim are being withheld pending the outcome of the investigation. Lyon County Deputies were assisted on scene by the Little Rock Ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol.
