Lyon County Fair Starts In Earnest On Monday

Rock Rapids, Iowa — It’s time for the Lyon County Fair in Rock Rapids. Preliminary activities wrap up today (Sunday) with the County Fair Gospel Concert featuring the Triumphant Sound Quartet at the Rock Rapids First Reformed Church.

The fair gets going in earnest on Monday. Elaine Hinsch has been on the Lyon County Fair Board for several years. She tells us what’s in store for fair-goers on Monday.

She says the Round Barn demonstrations will feature making ole bolen (which is a Dutch pastry similar to a doughnut hole with fruit), making spec ‘n dicken (which is a German pastry similar to a sweet pancake with meat), making lefse (which is a Norwegian pastry similar to a potato tortilla), making butter, making rope, and pulling taffy. They’ll also demonstrate spinning, tatting, knitting, quilting, table games, and cow milking.

Highlights of the rest of the week include Kids’ Day, the pork chop meal, and car races on Tuesday; the horse show, the steak fry, and the figure-8 races on Wednesday, and the 4-H supper and awards, tractor pull, and youth fun night on Thursday.
