Lyon County Sheriff’s Office To Host Police Dog Trials At Casino; Donations Sought

Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is raising funds to host an event for K-9’s and their handlers from around the area.

A letter from Lyon County Deputy Kyle Munneke to area merchants says that every year, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office’s K-9 unit joins other departments to certify their K-9’s with the United States Police Canine Association, which he says is the Nation’s Oldest and Largest Police K-9 Organization.

He tells us the USPCA trains and certifies police dogs in general patrol dog use, tracking, protection, narcotic detection, explosive detection, arson, fish and game, and search and rescue.

This year, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was selected to host the 2020 detector canine trials. The event will be held in April 2020 at the Grand Falls Casino and Resort and he says they hope to draw a large number of canine teams from Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

Deputy Munneke says that he’s looking for people and organizations that would consider supporting the event. The hosting agency is responsible for hotel rooms for judges and score keepers, evening meals for all participants, awards for participants, and raffle prizes to help raise money for the USPCA. He says the sheriff’s office needs to raise a minimum of $10,000 for the event and they hope to raise up to $15,000.

In addition to monetary donations, he says donated services, raffle items and other donation opportunities are also available.
