Marcus Teen Injured In Car Versus Train Wreck In LeMars

Le Mars, Iowa — A Marcus teen was injured in an accident with a train on Saturday (4/7) in Le Mars.
The Le Mars Police Department reports that about 7:40 PM, 17-year-old Krystal Leach of Marcus was southbound on Business Highway 75, in Le Mars in a 2006 Ford. Union Pacific Railroad Locomotive 6516 was pulling a train northbound on the Union Pacific tracks. Both vehicles were approaching the crossing at 12th Street Southwest.
Leach attepted to make a left turn and cross over the tracks, directly in front of the oncoming train. The locomotive struck the car in the passenger side door area, causing it to spin and collide with the railroad crossing light pole. The train went into emergency braking, and was able to stop 400 feet past the crossing.
The crossing is equipped with railroad crossing lights and audible signals, both of which were functioning according to the report. Reports are that the train sounded its horns as well.
Leach was transported to Mercy Medical by Mercy Air Care.
There were no other injuries reported.
The Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department, Le Mars Ambulance, and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department assisted the Le Mars Police Department at the scene.
