Matlock Man Jailed Following Incident With Firearm

O’Brien County, Iowa — A Matlock man is in jail, charged with multiple felony and misdemeanor crimes following an incident Wednesday afternoon.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, one of their off-duty deputies was waiting for his son to arrive home on the school bus Wednesday afternoon, when a Chevy truck parked on the gravel road near the deputy’s residence and a male exited the truck with a shotgun and began walking toward the deputy’s house. The subject then, according to authorities, walked into a grassy area and fired a shot from the shotgun. The Sheriff’s Office says the subject later fired more shots at flying pheasants, with shots being fired in the direction of the school bus, and in the direction of the deputy and his residence.

Authorities say the deputy made sure his son was safe, then responded to investigate the incident further. The deputy was joined by an on-duty deputy who had responded to assist. Deputies say they later arrested 38-year old Christopher Alan Powell of Matlock.

Powell is charged with the following, according to O’Brien County authorities: Felon In Dominion or Control of a Firearm, a Class D Felony; Possession of Methamphetamine, 3rd or Subsequent Offense, a Class D Felony; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor, Driving While Barred, an Aggravated Misdemeanor; Driving While Suspended, a Simple Misdemeanor; Reckless Use of a Firearm, a Simple Misdemeanor; Hunters Orange Apparel Violation, a Simple Misdemeanor; and Prohibited Hunting Near Building or Feedlot, a Simple Misdemeanor.

Officials say Powell made his initial appearance before a magistrate Thursday morning, and, at last report, being held in the O’Brien County Jail in lieu of a $5-thousand bond.
