May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

motorcycle rider_sxcNorthwest Iowa — May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  With the weather warming up, motorists will be encountering more and more motorcycles on Iowa’s roadways.

Trooper Vince Kurtz of the Iowa State Patrol reminds motorists to avoid distractions and pay extra attention, since motorcycles are harder to see than other vehicles.

Kurtz says there are also things motorcyclists can do to help themselves be seen, and avoid accidents.

The Trooper reminds us that the use of turn signals is required for automobiles and trucks, as well as motorcycles.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 41 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents in Iowa in 2015, which is 10 fewer than the prior year of 2014.  By the way, of the 41 people who died in motorcycle crashes in Iowa last year, 31 were not wearing a helmet.
