Mayor Calls For Flags To Fly At Half-Staff

Sheldon, Iowa — Prior to opening Wednesday’s Sheldon City Council meeting, Mayor Katricia Meendering announced that Sheldon’s fire chief has passed away. Jerry Meyer had served as a firefighter for 39 years, the last 18 of those as Sheldon’s Fire Chief. Meendering asked for a moment of silence, and also asked that flags in Sheldon be lowered to half staff in Meyer’s honor until Monday October 8th.

At an earlier Sheldon City Council meeting the council held a discussion concerning three buildings in the city that are considered dangerous. At this Wednesday’s meeting the council heard a report on one of those, the former ‘Thermocell building on Iselin Avenue near the railroad tracks. City Attorney Micah Schreurs told the council that there has been a ‘positive’ meeting with someone who is interested in that building location, and he is waiting for feedback. He said there are citizens who have an interest in working with the city on the Sunset Motel location and the burned out building at 428 Park Street, but the city is not pursuing these sites until they find out more about the Thermocell building situation.

In other business, the council agreed on clarifying language in the contract with the garbage haulers. This will set July 1st, 2020 as the target date for requiring all of the residences in the city to use one of the larger garbage containers. These containers can be dumped into the garbage trucks by hydraulic lift. About half of the Schwarz Sanitary customers and one-third of De Kruif Disposal customers are already using these containers. Anyone interest in getting one should call their garbage hauler.

As a last item of business the council went into closed session to discuss proposed city manager employment conditions. No action was taken after the closed session.
