Sibley, Iowa — A Minnesota man is dead after a crash near Sibley on Sunday evening.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 8:30 PM, 28-year-old Christopher Kadlec of McGrath, Minnesota was in Sibley, but was confused and took the southbound offramp, northbound onto southbound Highway 60. He failed to negotiate a curve and the vehicle entered the ditch, rolling over.

A passenger in the vehicle, 29-year-old Nicholas Carlson of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Kadlec and three other passengers, 54-year-old Mark Brune and 24-year-old Chay Brune, both of Hinkley, Minnesota; and 23-year-old Donald Nelson of Stanchfield, Minnesota; were transported to Osceola Community Hospital by ambulance. Kadlec and Mark Brune were airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The trooper’s report goes on to say that the driver and three passengers who were not wearing seatbelts were completely or partially ejected from the vehicle.

The preliminary report did not list a damage estimate for the vehicle.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

ADDITION: The accident report did not give the exact location, but we have received confirmation from the Iowa State Patrol that, “The crash occurred on the northbound Highway 60 on ramp from Second Avenue, approximately one half mile south of Sibley.” Also, the passenger who was wearing the seatbelt exited the vehicle on his own power and made the 911 call.

Does anyone have any good reason why that offramp was designed that way?
Never has made any sense to me.
You have to go in the opposite direction you want to go, both coming to and leaving Sibley.
I see people backing up on the northbound offramp all the time, I kinda figured it was just a matter of time before someone got hurt out there!
I feel terrible for the families involved, But I really would like to know the reasoning behind it being built that way!

It’s tragic, and was avoidable in the design stage.
The north exit for Highway 9 is normal, but the east and south exits are unlike any used in this part of the tri-state area. The sharp radius of the turns alone are a safety hazard.
There are semis that have missed their turn, frequently turning around at the intersection east of that overpass, because it’s so poorly marked.
We are preached at daily for texting and distracted driving, and that’s the best the Iowa DOT could do? Look in the mirror DOT staff.

    • Mark says:

Sadly people have to die before they change it.Maybe the d.o.t. of Iowa should be held responsible for this tragedy.

Sibley just has no clue all around. The town is 50yrs behind everyone else. There’s a reason they put the bypass around it.

    • Ryan says:

So what is their reason for bypassing Sheldon, Hospers, Alton, and Lemars? The issue here is the bypass, not the city of Sibley. Every town does things their own way, with alot of public scrutiny, but all in the same each is their own. It is tragic, and I do feel and pray for the families, but it is still driver error.

  3. I have been confused by it but never made that error. And driving too fast to stay on the road? And no seat belts? I can take the road that goes west off of the Chase Bag Factory at 55 mph. It is tricky, but if I can take that quick road switch at 55 mph and stay on the road, then anyone making the wrong lane mistake should be able to stay on the road, unless they are going extremely fast. I say “Good Riddance!”

    • Sarah says:

Ok Jake My dad was involved it this accident and I find it very RUDE of you to say good riddance!! First of all none of the men were from that area or knew that area!! Second when you get on the ON RAMP dont you accelerate to get up to the speed you need to be going?? Because I know I do!! I am sure the man that was driving feels awful as he is still in the hospital and so is my dad one guy passed away and the other 2 were treated and released! I know he feels bad and has appoligized I honestly don’t believe this was his fault give this man a break he has enough to deal with!!!

      • Sarah says:

        Sorry Robert NOT JAKE!!!!!!!!

      • Mark says:

remember this is the internet.the people posting are so removed from the emotions you and I feel.I had to deal with this when cyndi died.It broke my heart what people where saying..peace p.s. i need updates

        • Dean says:

Robert, you are an idiot. Someone has died and others are seriously injured and you say good riddance? How would you feel if this happened to someone in your family and you were told good riddance? Ron White said it best..”The next time you have a thought, let it go” You can’t fix stupid!

        • Sarah says:

Yes Mark I know but I am going to say what I feel!!! I will pray for this person and hope that he never has to deal with what we are going through!! Because it is not easy!!

  4. Rob says:

Come on now Jeremy our cable tv service is only about 30 years behind.
And our internet service is only about 10 years behind!
However the people of Sibley had nothing to do with the way that interchange
    was designed.
