Monday Could Be Busy Court Day

Northwest Iowa — Monday (November 13th, 2017) could shape up to be a busy day regarding court cases that we’ve been following. But events that are scheduled often do not happen according to schedule in the court system, due to various factors.

One of the scheduled events is a pretrial conference in the case of a Doon man facing a laundry list of charges after an April pursuit through southern Lyon County. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old Julian Barrientos of Doon failed to pull over for a deputy in April 2017 and reached speeds in excess of 90 miles-per-hour while eluding the deputy. They say he almost struck two patrol cars and failed to stop for a stop sign. He is accused of pulling into a rural driveway and failing to comply with deputies, resulting in the deputies deploying their tasers. He is charged with eluding, a class D felony; Operating While Intoxicated, Second Offense, an Aggravated Misdemeanor; and several simple misdemeanor counts. This pretrial conference has been postponed a number of times.

A pretrial conference is also scheduled for Monday in the case of a man facing a felony firearms charge in Lyon County. According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, they received a complaint of a suspicious person sleeping in a car at the intersection of 190th Street and Kingbird Avenue, northeast of George on September 26th, 2017. Deputies discovered 39-year old Samuel Henry Seivert was carrying a weapon. Further investigation allegedly discovered that Seivert, as a convicted felon, was banned from possessing firearms, so he was charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a Class “D” Felony. He has pled “not guilty.”

Also scheduled for Monday is an arraignment in the case of a Rock Valley man facing a first-degree theft charge. The Sioux Center Police Department says that at about 11 p.m. on Friday, October 6th, 31-year-old John Lamfers of Rock Valley allegedly entered the Rent-All parking lot in Sioux Center after business hours and took a car trailer and a skid loader, valued at a combined total of $37,000. He was charged with first-degree theft, a class C felony; along with misdemeanor charges.
