Mother Who Took Daughters, Caused AMBER Alert Gets Probation

Spencer, Iowa — A mother who took her three daughters from Royal in September 2017 — prompting the issuance of an AMBER Alert — has been sentenced.

Clay County Chief Deputy Zach Larsen reported that the AMBER Alert was canceled after the three girls were located in good condition in Sanborn the same night they were taken. Deputy Larsen says the girls’ mother, 26-year old Danica Arzaga, was the subject of a search that ended when she was taken into custody in Woodbury County the next afternoon.

Arzaga faced three counts of Kidnapping in the Third Degree, all Class “C” Felonies. But a plea agreement dismissed all the felony charges, and Arzaga pled guilty two three misdemeanor charges of child endangerment.

According to court records, she was sentenced to six years in prison, with all time suspended. She must serve six years’ probation and pay a fine.
