New Church Coming To Sheldon???????

Date posted - August 21, 2012

Sheldon, Iowa — If you’ve driven down Business 60 in Sheldon in the past few days, you may have noticed a “SOLD” sign posted in front of the former Joyce’s Food Store building.

The building, which has been vacant since the Sheldon Food Pride store closed about 10 years ago, was put up for sale earlier this year.

KIWA has learned that an agreement has been reached for the sale of the building, between the owner, Joe Joyce of Emmetsburg, and a church from Orange City. ¬†We’re told that more details will be available once the sale closes in early September.

Even though I don’t think a church would be the best use for this property, it’s better than sitting empty. As the city moves farther east, it’s going to be harder and harder to fill commercial properties along old highway 60. In order to retain existing businesses, or attract new ones, the city is going to have to do more to make old highway 60 more attractive. In the past few months, a hotel developer, a fuel/travel center, and two restaraunt chains have been looking for a Sheldon location. Chances are, if they decide to locate here, they will build out by the bypass. I hate to even think what a new Walmart would do to this town.

i heard that kfc and taco bell are coming to sheldon. i highly doubt that they would locate anywhere but out by the new expressway. i think sheldon could also use another hotel and something like a TA truckstop or a Pilot. the 60 expressway has a lot of big semi trucks on it and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of places for them to fuel up at between sioux city and worthington. if sheldon is going to grow, i think the city should be doing more to try to recruit buisnesses that would benefit from the expressway, like hotels, restaruants, gas stations, etc.. jobs are jobs these days, and sheldon could use more of them, not to mention the tax revenue that more businesses could generate for the city.
