New Info: Bucket Truck Tips Near Rock Rapids

Date posted - February 24, 2012

We now have a little more information on that aerial bucket truck that tipped over on Wednesday in a field southeast of Rock Rapids.

Lyon County Sheriff Blythe Bloemendaal says that his office isn’t doing an official investigation. He says that would be up to OSHA. He says he’s certain they will be investigating the incident.

However, Bloemendaal says it’s his understanding that the bucket truck may not have had both outriggers — or platforms out, and that may have been why the truck tipped over.

He says the report is that the bucket was up 70 feet with at least two people in the bucket when the truck tipped over. Both victims were transported from the scene via Lyon County Ambulance, and one was airlifted via Sanford Trauma One to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The identities of the victims are not confirmed but they were not from this area. Bloemendaal says they were from somewhere in Minnesota.

The men were working for a company called Aevenia, that is in the power line construction business. He says he thinks they were installing new power lines.

The Rock Rapids Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
