The Lyon County Magistrate Nominating Commission has appointed 30-year-old Jenny Lea Winterfeld to fill the vacancy created by the death of the former magistrate, 60-year-old Francis Honrath of Larchwood. Winterfeld will assume duties on Friday, December 20th, 2013.
A graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Law and Northwestern College in Orange City, Winterfeld practiced law with the Waagmeester Law Office before becoming a partner with the Klay, Veldhuizen, Bindner,De Jong, De Jong, Halverson & Winterfeld law practice in 2011. That firm has offices in Paullina, Sioux Center, and Orange City.
The current term of office for magistrates ends on July 31, 2017.
Judicial magistrates may hear cases in other counties upon order of the chief judge of the district. Magistrates are required to be attorneys and have jurisdiction over simple misdemeanors, including scheduled violations, county and municipal infractions, and small claims. Magistrates have authority to issue search warrants, conduct preliminary hearings, and hear certain involuntary hospitalization matters.
