Northwest Iowa High School Jazz Choirs Perform Well At State Contest

Spirit Lake — Several northwest Iowa High School Jazz Choirs performed well and were honored on Monday, (2/4). Twelve area high schools participated in the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Choir Festival at the Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts in Spirit Lake.

 Receiving a division “I” or superior rating were:

 

  • Akron-Westfield Choir #2, directed by Ryan Schuknecht
  • Okoboji, directed by Erin Orness
  • Sheldon, directed by Adam Orban
  • Sibley-Ocheyedan, directed by Corky Koerselman
  • Spencer Choir #2 Director Katie Kardell
  • Spirit Lake, directed by Duane Ites

 

Receiving a division “II” or excellent rating were:


  • Akron-Westfield Choir #1, Director-Ryan Schuknecht
  • Central Lyon, directed by Ann Langholdt
  • Forest City, directed by Michelle Jacobson
  • Harris-Lake Park, directed by Kathy Greve
  • Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, directed by Kristi Wingert
  • Kingsley-Pierson, directed by Maggie McDermott
  • Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, directed by Kim Wankum
  • Spencer Choir #1 Director Katie Kardell

The Jazz Choirs were evaluated on ensemble characteristics of tone quality, blend, rhythmic feel, interpretation, precision, musicianship, solo creativity, and balance. Each Choir is rated according to Iowa High School Music Association guidelines. In addition, each choir receive a 15 minute clinic on suggestions for improvement/changes to their performance.
