Sheldon, Iowa — According to organizers of the O’Brien County Relay For Life, the event was a success.
O’Brien County Relay For Life Chair Cindy Runger says $33,638 was raised to fight cancer at the event, which was held at the Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center on the campus of Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon on Friday, June 20th. Eighteen teams were involved.
As far as fundraising — reaching the Gold level of $5000, were teams “Lively’s Lovin’ Life”, and the “C” team of Sheldon.
Reaching the Silver level of $3500 was team “NCC Thunder”.
Forty survivors participated in the survivor lap. There were 596 luminary bags purchased in honor or in memory of loved ones, which were placed around the track in the Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center. A candlelight vigil followed the event at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center, from midnight Friday night until 7 AM Saturday morning.
Runger says she would like to thank businesses and individuals of O’Brien County and the surrounding area for their generous support. She says, “Our Event would not be possible if we didn’t have the many volunteer-hours donated by everyone.”
Money that was raised throughout the year goes toward research, education, patient services, and advocacy programs through the American Cancer Society.
