O’Brien Relay For Life Raises More Than $36,000

O’Brien County, Iowa — The O’Brien County Relay for Life was held Tuesday night at the Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center, on the campus of Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon.

The Relay for Life is the major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and is held each year in thousands of cities and counties throughout the country.

The Relay for Life is the culmination of a year-long fundraising effort carried out through various activities, from bake sales, to restaurant tip nights. The O’Brien County Relay is when all of the teams from throughout the county gather to celebrate those who have beaten cancer, support those who still fight the dread disease, and honor those who have lost their battle.

Tuesday night’s O’Brien County Relay for Life featured food, games, a silent auction, entertainment, a guest speaker, and was capped off by the Luminaria Ceremony.

O’Brien County Relay for Life Chair Cindy Runger tells KIWA that the tentative total for this year’s Relay is $36,684 raised for cancer research and patient support. Runger says that total may grow over the next day or two, as final donations are tallied.

Runger extended her thanks to everyone in O’Brien County for their great support, which made this year’s event a very special evening.
