Open Enrollment Deadline Approaching

schoolNorthwest Iowa — If you are considering the use of open enrollment to allow your child to attend school in a district other than the one in which you live, the deadline for completion of open enrollment applications is approaching.

Sheldon Community Schools Board Secretary LaDonn Hartzell says the deadline for regular open enrollment for grades, 1 through 12, for the 2017-2018 school year is March 1st.  Applications submitted after that date may be denied.  She says applications for students may be approved after the deadline, if there is a compelling reason the deadline couldn’t be met, such as a change in the family’s situation.  Those applications are considered on a case by case basis.

The deadline for regular open enrollment for Kindergarten students is set later in the year than the deadline for older students.  The Kindergarten deadline is September 1st for the 2017-2018 school year.  Hartzell says that if you fill out an open enrollment application for your child, but then change your mind and decide to keep your child in their current school district, you can rescind the application.
