The home security company, Safewise says that in order to identify the 15 safest cities in Iowa, they reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2013, along with population data. They eliminated all cities with fewer than 3,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

From there, they say they evaluated the remaining cities. They say they narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes, such as aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery and property crimes such as burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft in each city. To further level the playing field, they say they calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.

According to 2013 population estimates, Orange City has right around 6,000 people. Safewise says there were 0.48 violent crimes per 1000 people in Orange City in 2013, and 8.57 property crimes per thousand that year. That was good for 12th place in the state.

The city of Waukon was number one, with 0.26 violent crimes and 1.3 property crimes per thousand. The only other city in the northwest Iowa region was Emmetsburg, which was number two with 0.26 violent and 1.83 property crimes per thousand. Forrest City was seventh.
