Oregon Man Taken To Hospital, Vehicle Totaled After Accident West Of Rock Valley

Iowa State Patrol logoRock Valley, Iowa — A Salem, Oregon man was taken to the hospital and his car was totaled after an accident on Tuesday, August 20 near Rock Valley.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 11:50 AM, 21-year-old Helgar Serrano of Inwood was westbound on 300th Street, seven miles west of Rock Valley in a 2001 semi, owned by Meadowvale Dairy, LLC. Seventy-four-year-old Howard Van Otterloo of Salem, Oregon was southbound on Highway 18 in a 2013 Buick.

According to the trooper’s report, Serrano failed to stop for the stop sign before crossing Highway 18. Van Otterloo observed that the semi was not going to stop at the stop sign and attempted to slow down but was unable to avoid contact. The car struck the semi in the fuel tank on the passenger side.

Van Otterloo was transported to Heeg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley by Rock Valley Ambulance.

Serrano’s semi received $750 damage. Van Otterloo’s Buick was totaled, with $25,000 damage.
