Alton, Iowa — A Paullina man was injured in a motorcycle versus car accident on Wednesday (6/6) near Alton.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 6:45 AM, 28-year-old Joel Van Engen of Paullina was westbound on Highway 10, under the Highway 60 overpass on a 1979 Honda motorcycle. Fifty-seven-year-old Sharon Bortscheller of Remsen was also facing westbound in front of Van Engen in a 2004 Pontiac.

Bortscheller was stopped with her turn signal on waiting to turn left from Highway 10 onto East Division Street. She was waiting for an oncoming oversized load to go by her. Van Engen was westbound and didn’t see that the car was stopped in front of him in time. He locked up the brakes on his motorcycle and slid to the right but still struck the car in the rear.

Van Engen was transported to Orange City Health System Hospital by Alton Ambulance.

Van Engen’s Honda received $500 damage. Bortscheller’s Pontiac received $1000 damage.

Van Engen was charged with failure to maintain control.
