Primary Election Results

Northwest Iowa — Tuesday was Primary Election Day in Iowa, with several races of interest to northwest Iowans.

The Republican Primary for State Senate District #3 found Lynn Evans the winner with 3,548 votes, compared to 1,925 for Anthony LaBruna. For State Senate District #5, incumbent Spirit Lake businessman Dave Rowley defeated challenger and fellow Spirit Lake resident David D. Dow 3,402 to 1,631.

In the Republican Primary for State Representative, District #4, incumbent Skyler Wheeler won that newly-drawn district, defeating Kendal Zylstra by just 220 votes. The final tally was Wheeler 2,421 to Zylstra’s 2,201 votes.

There was a three-way race in the Republican primary for newly-drawn House District #5. Iowa State Patrol Trooper Zach Dieken won that contest with 2,119 votes, compared to 919 for incumbent Dennis Bush and 758 for Thomas Kuiper.

In the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate, incumbent Senator Chuck Grassley soundly defeated challenger Jim Carlin 143,289 to 51,755. Grassley will now face Sioux County native Democrat Michael Franken in the November General election, after Franken won a three-way race in the Democrat primary, defeating former Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer 86,372 to 62,498, with Glenn Hurst picking up 6,572 votes in that race.

All of these totals are unofficial results, the vote counts do not become official until they are canvassed by the County Supervisors in each county.
