Property Tax Assistance Available For Disabled, Elderly

O'Brien Courthouse2Primghar, Iowa — There is some help available if you are elderly or disabled, have a low income, and need help paying your property taxes.

O’Brien County Treasurer Phyllis Rohlfsen says that one of the programs they offer is the Property Tax Credit Claim. She says you have to be over the age of 65 as of December 31st, 2016 or totally disabled and between the ages of 18 to 64 by that date. She says they have forms in their office that can be filled out. She says it is an income-based program. The household can make no more than $22,584 in combined income to be eligible for this program.

She says there is also what’s called a Rent Reimbursement program, which assists Iowa residents who pay a portion of property tax through their rent. She says the forms are available through their office, but the application is actually made to the State of Iowa. The same income limit of $22,584 applies, says Rohlfsen.

She says if you have special circumstances such as living in a nursing home and not having enough income to pay your property taxes, you can apply for suspended taxes through the Iowa Department of Human Services. She says the county board of supervisors have to approve such requests.

Rohlfsen says there is also a program for mobile home owners for a reduced tax rate on Mobile Home Tax, but they haven’t had anyone apply for it for several years. She says the same $22,584 income limit applies.

If you need more information, it is available. Start by calling their office at (712) 957-3210 or the county treasurer’s office in your county.
