Proposed Airport Near Sioux Center, Orange City Receives $1.18 Million Grant

Date posted - August 31, 2012

Sioux County, Iowa — A proposed regional airport in Sioux County has received over a million dollars in a federal grant.

Senator Tom Harkin says that the federal government will kick in $1,187,563 to buy the land near Maurice needed to construct the airport, which has been in the planning stages for more than ten years. The proposed new airport would have longer runways than the current airports in Orange City and north of Sioux Center. The longer runways would better serve business aircraft. After it’s built, the towns would close their current airports.

Senator Harkin says the new airport would help the Sioux County economy continue to expand and add quality jobs. The Senator sits on the transportation appropriations subcommittee.

Sioux County needs another “airport” like it needs another church.

Yep, Sioux County is too saturated with churches. That’s why an Orange City church just bought the old Joyce’s Food Store in Sheldon (Obrien County).

just to clarify….. that “orange city church” is too full, standing room only every sunday. and several people who attend that church are from sheldon, so they are excited to have this space. and wasnt this about airports?? :)

a buck says they name it Sioux County International Airport

This is just another example of government waste. Just how many businesses in Sioux Center and Orange City need jet service? It would be a lot cheaper to offer anyone that needs a flight a limo ride to the airport in Sioux City or Sioux Falls. Heck, you could even serve them wine, champagne, and caviar, and it would still be a whole lot cheaper than building an airport and maintaining it. How about buying a helicopter that only needs a thousand square foot parcel to land and take off and offer connecting flights to Sioux City and Sioux Falls?

  4. conversative democrat says:

Wonder how many people would consider this a government “handout?” After all, isn’t that a big issue in the upcoming election. Grant or handout…guess it depends on which side of the fence you’re on. So what’s a better use of government dollars?

  5. Dutch Visitor says:

Two airports into one, sounds like somebody will lose their job on one side or the other.

  6. Some Random Thought says:

If they update the current airports runways, would that not be cheaper? Why close down two airports and have them sit empty.

Congratulations. I was in Sioux County three times this week. Sioux Center is amazing. Forty years ago Sioux Center and Sibley were the same size and Hull was just a little town. I was in Hull today and couldn’t help but notice how busy main street is. It was hard to find a parking place on mainstreet. I was in Sibley, too. Obviously Sioux County folks are doing something right. Again. Congratulation and keep up the good work all while maintaining that friendly small town atmosphere. No one is ever shunned when trying to make a contribution to the communities in Sioux County. Very impressive indeed.
