Quick Action From Ireton Driver Saves Children From Injury In Van Fire Near Sioux Center

van fireSioux Center, Iowa — Seven children are safe after a van fire, thanks to the quick thinking of an Ireton woman.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that just before 3:30 Friday afternoon, December 6, 2013, their deputies and the Sioux Center Fire Department were called to a van fire.  It was at the intersection of Elmwood Avenue and 420th Street, six miles southwest of Sioux Center.

The Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Tara Dekkers of Ireton was eastbound on 420th street driving a 1985 Ford cargo van. Dekkers reported she heard a pop and then the interior of the van started to fill with smoke. Dekkers immediately stopped the van and removed seven young children she was transporting. The van soon became completely engulfed in flames.

No injuries were reported. Dekkers’ quick action prevented injury to the children in the van.

The van is considered a total loss.

It appears that a mechanical failure caused the fire.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Sioux Center Fire Department, the Sioux Center Ambulance, and Sioux Center Police Department.
