Recent Harvest-Related Crashes Prompt Safety Tips From Trooper Kurtz

Northwest Iowa — Harvest season has finally arrived here in northwest Iowa, and since it began there have been a number of vehicle versus farm implement traffic crashes in the area. We asked Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz for some advice on how to avoid this type of collision.

Kurt says the avoidance of these types of crashes begins with the farmer properly marking his implements.

He says there are also lighting requirements for equipment on the roadway.

Trooper Kurtz reminds farmers that, if a crash happens because their equipment isn’t properly marked or lighted, they can face more than just a traffic ticket.

Kurtz also had advice for motorists.

Trooper Kurtz also reminds motorists that passing, even if you’re passing a slow-moving farm implement, is not only illegal, but dangerous, in a no-passing zone, or within 50-feet either side of an intersection.
