Sioux Falls, SD — A large portion of the five-state area, including our listening area is under a Red Flag Warning. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur soon. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and hot temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
The Weather Service says northwest winds at 20 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts 35 will contribute, as will low humidity values, as low as 15 to 20 percent. Temperatures in the 80’s to mid-90’s will also contribute.
The Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon until 8 PM this evening.
No burning is suggested. It is further suggested that people use extreme caution with anything that could get hot, like farm equipment, welding equipment, and smoking materials. Do not throw lit cigarettes from moving vehicles.
Firefighting is also more difficult in these conditions and the Weather Service says fighting fires at the flanks is recommended in red flag conditions.
