The United Nations has promoted the International Day of Persons with Disability since 1992. The observance is meant to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.

The commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities provides an opportunity to address this exclusion by focusing on promoting accessibility and removing all types of barriers in society.

We had a chance to speak with Lisa Johnson, director of advancement at Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon. She tells us what they do for people with disabilities.

She says that people with disabilities are people first. And they deserve dignity and respect.

Johnson says the community really plays an important role in everything they do at Village Northwest, through their financial support.

The United Nations says more than one billion people worldwide live with some form of disability. That’s 15 percent of the world’s population.
