Saturday Night Accident Injures Seven Hawarden Residents

Hawarden Ax 3-12-13Hawarden, Iowa — Seven Hawarden residents were injured in an accident on Saturday night near Hawarden, and two of them were further transported to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 8:45 PM, 66-year-old Warren Vargo of Hawarden was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Venture van westbound on 420th Street two miles northeast of Hawarden when he lost control of the vehicle, which entered the north ditch striking a fence and a Northwest Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) utility pole.

John Finley, age 24, Joshua Finley, age three, Natily Finley, eight months, Brianna Vargo, age 16, Sandy Vargo, age 28, Annissa Vargo, age six, and April Vargo, age eight, all of Hawarden were transported to the Hawarden Hospital by the Hawarden Ambulance for treatment of their injuries. John Finley and Joshua Finley were later transported to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls by the Hawarden Ambulance for additional treatment of their injuries.

The Chevrolet sustained approximately $4,500 in damages. The fence sustained approximately $300 in damages; the utility pole sustained approximately $1,000 in damages. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hawarden Fire Department, Hawarden Ambulance, Hawarden Police Department and Northwest REC.

The accident remains under investigation.
