School Board Approves Appointments, Expenditures

Sheldon-Schools-logoSheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education met this week, one of the items on their agenda was the appointment of the District’s Secretary/Treasurer for the coming year.  The Board voted unanimously to renew the appointment of current Secretary/Treasurer LaDonn Hartzell.

The Board appointed Middle School Principal Cindy Barwick as the District’s Equity Coordinator, and approved the members of the 2016-17 District Leadership Team.  The complete list of names of those making up the District Leadership Team can be found here.

In other action, the Board voted to purchase three vehicles.  Two of the vehicles are to be multi-passenger vehicles, which will replace a van and a Suburban that the District will trade in.  The third is a new Lunch Van.  The Lunch Van will be paid for with lunch funds.

The Board approved the purchase of a sound baffle system for the East Elementary gym.  The bid accepted was from Carey’s Electronics in Spencer, for a total of $19,520.  The Board also approved the purchase of a new sounds/PA system for the Football/Track Complex.  Three bids were received for that system, and the Board accepted the low bid of $15,708 from Mid-States Audio & Video.  The consideration of a new sound/recording system for the High School Band Room had been on the agenda for this meeting, but was tabled after Band Director Cliff St. Clair indicated he needed more time to complete research on the issue.

In other action, the District has applied for E-Rate monies to assist in upgrading the District’s internet switching and WiFi equipment.  Superintendent Robin Spears told the Board that, while there is a small chance the application won’t be approved, the best estimate of a timetable for receiving the approval would be around January 1st, 2017.  With that in mind, the Board elected to go ahead with the purchase of the equipment, at a total cost of just over $249-thousand, and be reimbursed when the E-Rate funds come through.  The action will allow the equipment to be installed prior to the start of the 2016-17 school year.

The Board’s next regular monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, August 10th at 6:00 pm
