School Board Approves FY2018-19 Budget

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education held their Regular Monthly Meeting for April Tuesday at the Sheldon Middle School. Earlier we had erroneously told you that meeting was scheduled for Wednesday evening. We apologize for our mistake.

During their Tuesday meeting the Board held a Public Hearing on the 2018-19 District Budget. School officials say there were no public comments, neither written or oral, presented. The Board approved the budget following the public hearing.

The Board also approved a pair of open enrollment applications. One was for a Kindergarten student coming into the Sheldon Community Schools from the Boyden-Hull Community Schools. The second was for another Kindergarten student, who is leaving the Sheldon District and entering the Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District.

In other action, the Board accepted the resignations of: Brittany Maassen from her 4th Grade Teaching position; Reagan Klinker as 5th & 6th Grade Teacher; DeAndra Mahrt from her Middle School Guidance Counselor position; Caitlin Hanson as 7-12 Vocal Music Teacher; Erica Koedam as Middle School Softball Coach; and Amanda Heusinkveld as East Elementary Associate.

In addition, the Board approved several employment contracts: Sheyla Silva will be in Food Service at East Elementary; Colby Kleinhesselink will serve as Assistane Baseball Coach; Andy Cooper will coach Middle School Baseball; Samantha Van Sloten will teach 4th Grade; Rachel Jurgens will teach Special Education at the middle school, and will coach middle school softball; Callie Dykstra will teach 5th and 6th grades; Krista Johnson will be a full-time custodian at the high school; and Brenda Thole will be a part-time custodian at the middle school. They also approved salary adjustments for Classified Staff, along with the District’s Administrators and Directors.

In other action, the Board approved expenditures for technology upgrades during Tuesday night’s meeting. They approved $34,230 for new furniture for the Middle School Synergistics Lab, $57,385 for 18 synergistic learning modules, $72,990 for 20 SMART interactive flat panels, and $14,639.60 for 20 TVs for mirroring with wall mount. The Board also approved installation of LED lighting in the high school gym, at a cost of $18,588. Superintendent Robin Spears told the Board that the LED lighting would save the District approximately $2,536 a year in energy costs.

The Board also approved the Graduating Class of 2018 at the monthly meeting, and proclaimed the week of May 6th through 12th as “Teacher Appreciation Week”.

Monday, May 14th is the date set for a public hearing on the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Amendment. That will be held during the regular May Board meeting. That meeting will begin at 5:00 pm, with the public hearing scheduled for 5:30. Again, that date for the May regular meeting and public hearing is MONDAY, May 14th.
