School District P&C Insurance Premiums To Decrease

Sheldon, Iowa — Wednesday evening’s Sheldon Community School Board meeting marked the final board meeting for Robin Spears as school superintendent. Spears is set to retire at the end of this month.

During Wednesday’s meeting, Spears’ years of service to the Sheldon District were honored, and School Board President Kecia Hickman presented him with a recognition plaque.

The Board got some good news at Wednesday evening’s meeting when Tom Fuoss of Perspective Insurance told them that the District’s premiums for property and casualty insurance will be decreasing for the 2018-19 school year. For the 2017-18 year, the District paid nearly $282-thousand for coverage. That number will decrease to a little more than $244-thousand for 2018-19.

The School Board aproved a trio of Open Enrollment Applications, all three enrolling into the Sheldon District from the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn District.

Several employment contracts for the 2018-19 school year were approved at Wednesday’s meeting. Tamara Van Meeteren  and Melissa Wenthe will each be TLC Model Teachers at a salary of $2,900 each. Kyle Zankowski will be paid $5,015 for Zero Hour PE Class. Maggie Lloyd will be Head Girls Track Coach, at a salary of $4,823, and Savannah Sauer will serve as Part-Time School Nurse, at a salary of $25 per hour, for 14 to 20 hours per week. In addition, the Board approved Matt Dykstra and Stewart Cooper as volunteer High School Football Coaches.

In other action, the Board approved contracts with suppliers for bread and milk for the upcoming school year. Pan-O-Gold Baking was the total lowest bidder, and won the bread bid. The Milk Contract for next school year went to Dean Foods, the lower of the two bids submitted.

The Board approved a $5-thousand transfer from the General Fund to the Activity Fund during this month’s meeting. Those funds will be used for safety equipment, specifically to repair and refurbish football helmets.

Tickets for Sheldon Community Schools athletic functions will be the same amount as last year, the Board decided. The cost of a Student Athletic Activity Ticket is $30 per year with the cost of an Adult Athletic Activity Coupon Book at $40.00 for ten tickets.  The Student Athletic Activity Ticket has been $30.00 since the 2015-16 school year.

The Board approved a technology purchase, as well. The bids submitted were for 230 Lenovo 300e Chromebook computers, and Chromebook Management License. The Board accepted the low bid of $62,955.60 from Sterling for the computer purchase. Bids were also submitted by CDW-G and Super Hi-Tech in Sheldon.
