Second Meeting On Crossroads Park Held Monday Night

Sheldon, Iowa — Planning for the proposed park near Crossroads Pavilion took another step forward as Mike Bell of RDG Design presented some possibilities for features that could be included in the park.  The information was reviewed Monday afternoon with a committee, and then presented to a group of Sheldon residents Monday evening.

A few of the ideas for the park include: signage at the round-about that would direct people to the events center and other park features; an area behind the events center that could be used for large concerts and other activities; a neighborhood park between the pond and Prairie Trail Road; a fishing pier on the northwest side of the pond; winter activities on the south end of the property; construction of the Recreational Trail around the perimeter of the pond; canoe and kayak access; and stone steps to the waters edge for fishing, just to name a few.

The idea of a Dog Park was brought up, but it appears that there would not be enough space available.  An RV park had been shown on some plans, even before Crossroads Pavilion was built, but Bell explained that it was determined that the space would be better fitted for commercial use.  A wide variety of park amenities were also discussed such as splash pads, a zip-line, and bocci ball.  The community park areas would also include picnic areas with shelter houses.

Bell said that the next public meeting would be held in about two months.  During that time his company will further develop the plans.  Also, the company that built the Events Center will have information on the estimated cost of various aspects of the Park Development.

During the discussion it was emphasized that more people in the community need to get involved in the process, and funding sources need to be explored.  When plans are completed and the city decides to move forward, a request will be submitted to the same state grant program that dedicated over $700-thousand to the construction of the Crossroads Pavilion.
