Sheldon Council To Talk Parking

Sheldon, Iowa — Parking on certain Sheldon streets will be discussed again when the Sheldon City Council meets Wednesday June 20th.

At their last meeting, the Council discussed the placing of signs in the downtown area regulating ‘No Parking’ hours and a two hour parking limit.  At that time they were not able to locate ordinances  that might still be in effect.  Since that time they have found an ordinance that was passed on December 9th, 1963, that forbids parking on downtown streets from 2 am to 6 am It was signed by Mayor Merrill Fritts and City Clerk  Dorothy Mitchell.   It appears to include all downtown streets except 9th Street.  They also uncovered an ordinance that established the downtown area as a two-hour parking zone.   This ordinance was enacted by the City Council on May 20, 1987, and signed by Mayor Vern Schemper and City Clerk Dorothy Mitchell.  These two ordinances which appear to still be in effect, will probably be the starting point for Wednesday night’s discussion.

The Council is also expected to discuss concerns with parking problems on East 6th Street.

Other agenda items include approval of wages for a Crossroads Pavilion Assistant Manager, consider approval of a resolution setting employees wages and salaries, and consider a wage resolution for certain employees for the duration of the City Manager vacancy.

The council will also hold a discussion on filling the City Manager position, filling the full-time Paramedic position, and a discussion on garbage service.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
