What’s it going to take to get the speed reduced? Someone’s DEATH!!!!!!!
There has to be at least one accident a week on Highway 18 between the college and the bypass. At least I seem to read about it on here.
Experience in another state tells me that it may take the death or 3 or 4 people before DOT even listens (and the state DOT does control 18). A speed limit of 35 is more than sufficient from one bridge on the east to the bridge on the west. And more enforcement please–I have nearly been run over several times by trucks coming west down the hill by Country Club road at 6:30 in the morning on my way to work. Wait until we have 3 or 4 ballfields across the street from the new HyVee convenience store–there will be a lot of close calls–hopefully they will be ONLY close calls before someone in authority grows what it takes to make a simple “common sense” decision. Who along 18 would not like to see the speed reduced and more safe.
I called the DOT a while ago and just yesterday I emailed them. I will continue to email them until the speed is reduced. I think everyone else that agrees that the speed should be reduced should email them too.
it would not be as bad as it is if the local law was out ther doing there job–plain and simple– enforce the speed limit we have– the right hand lane in town is a get out of my way lane– i have one more block to go and i am to get there before you do — 45 mph is the norm–the local owners of the police dept. is the people they serve–dont anyone care — its time to get them on the street and out of the coffee shop — thats the only place i see them– getem to work or clean house–
The IOWA DOT needs to something with that corner! Stop lights, decrease the speed limit and a turning lane! I have lived in Sheldon all my life and that intersection is dangerous! There has been 2 deaths of young boys at that corner already and many other critical injuries! I won’t let my child cross at that intersection bike, moped or car! I think Sheldon residences need to email or phone the DOT to get something done before another life is taken, maybe the more we hound them they will get the hint!
I think that a campaign by local citizens as well as pressure by both law enforcement and city officials will be helpful to get the DOT to recognize a need for change. The problem with the way the DOT determines traffic flow is that they wait until there is a quota of accidents, and often a number of serious injuries or deaths is required before they make any changes. This is an entirely inappropriate method. Anyone can see that there are a number of problems with the current speed limit and traffic control in that part of Sheldon, and the goal of safety that the DOT is supposed to have would be better serve in proactively fixing a problem BEFORE lives are lost, not after.
Maybe the person on top who makes the decision as to the speed limit would maybe need to suffer a loved one being involved in an accident before it dawns on him that maybe something should be changed. Isn’t that sad to say?!! I don’t want anymore people getting hurt or killed. I WANT THE SPEED REDUCED!!
Drivers need to pay attention always and foremost. Blame the bad drivers, not the DOT or law enforcement
This accident was the result of a bad driver. In this case a driver was not paying attention and did not realize that the cars in front of him were stopped and he re-ended the car in front of him. If he had been paying attention, this never would have happened. The cars were traveling west and the first car wanted to turn south. He was waiting for traffic to clear so he could turn and the cars behind him were stopped. It had nothing to do with the intersection – just a bad driver.
Maybe so, but the accident wouldn’t have been so severe if the speed was reduced. A rear end hit at 50 mph has more of an impact than a rear end hit at 35 mph!
make your feelings known to those on the Sheldon City Council, the city manager and the police chief
It should read: rear-ended the car in front of him.
This is the preliminary report of an accident. The details of exactly what happened will be reported in the police report when it becomes available. We never report who was going what direction, whether it involved the intersection, and certainly not who was at fault in a report such as this. Those details are supplied by the investigating agency — in this case, the Sheldon Police.
I was there so I know what happened.
Make sure you bring this up at the appropriate time, I ran into someone this weekend that would have a voice with this situation, ( at least could be very powerful in lobbing for a change in the speed limit ) and i got laughed at.. I was very upset, but, hey, maybe he already tried doing something about it… ( I sure do wish we could vote these people in our something ) Who hires these people for the positions they have anyways, just out of curiosity..?
Heres the thing, first i have seen so many people texting and driving and with school starting there is going to be a lot more trouble. Next i have see trucks going way to fast comming in to town if the police would radar out on that end of town truckers and everyone eles would think twice about speeding in to town.
The DOT responded to my email…
Typically these requests come from the City, the right-of-way is owned by the DOT, but we work closely with the City for the need of a traffic speed study. However, the City of Sheldon has already contacted the DOT and we are in agreement to wait until an up-coming construction project on US18 is completed, which will be during the 2013 construction season. This project is west of the IA60/US18 interchange but it will be beneficial to complete a speed study after the project as the speed limits may be affected in the immediate area. We have the speed study scheduled for the fall of 2013 from just east of the IA60/US18 interchange to 2nd Ave./Northwest Blvd.
The most recent speed study completed was February, 2008, after the construction of IA60/US18 interchange. The construction project should also help alleviate some of your concerns as the four lane will be converted to a 3-lane with the center lane being a two way turn lane.
Well, thats great hopefully something happens.
Pleased to hear the City already contacted them. I hope they will do this study all the way to the stop lights, doesnt sound like it though. Right?
Curt–
According to City Manager Scott Wynia, Highway 18 will be three lanes from old 60 to new 60:

Thanks BVP for sharing what the IDOT said BUT the study is over a year away and
when completed they still may do nothing about speed. Until the state decides please drive the GAUNTLET carefully.
I dont doubt the three lanes, that is great for Sheldon. I hope he can also persuade the DOT to lower the speed limit to 35 mph as well… I know its not up to him, but I hope he can pull a rabbit out of his hat in regards to the speed limit.
3 lanes, 35 mph and us drivers doing our own part, should and would reduce accidents.
Agreed Curt!
