Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon sports bar, restaurant, and bowling alley received significant damage in a fire Tuesday evening.

Sheldon Fire, Ambulance, and EMA were called to the scene of a structure fire at Budd-Z’s Sports Bar & Grill on Highway 18 and Third Avenue around 6:45 Tuesday evening. The business also is Sheldon’s bowling alley.

Sheldon Fire Company Chief Jerry Meyer says arriving fire units were greeted with thick, black smoke and flames coming from the south side of the building.

Sheldon Fire immediately called for mutual aid from Boyden and Sanborn fire to help fight the fire.

The chief says firefighters made entry by breaking through the front door. They used hand lines and an unmanned nozzle to attack the fire. The aerial was also used to spray the roof and cut a ventilation hole in the roof.

The fire was put out in about 40 minutes but not before the structure and its contents suffered major damage. Fire crews were on scene for about three and a half hours.

No injuries were reported according to Meyer.

The Fire Marshal is expected to be on scene Wednesday morning to investigate the cause.

It was bad enough to smoke up our house. My husband and 2 out of 3 kids had to evacuate our house due to major smoke damage. We aren’t alllowed back in for up to 3 days. My husband said he and the two kiddos were just sittin there and the next he knew the house was filling up with smoke. He thought maybe our house was on fire until he got out and realized it wasn’t the house it was the bowling alley across the street. Luckily everyones saafe.

Any update on Budd’z??? Are they re-opening? Re-building? Any rumors/news/etc? Does it look like any work is being done or they might re-open soon? Or are they reopened?
