Sheldon Police Handle Three Accidents, Handle Other Incidents

Sheldon officers took a report of theft from Shopko on Friday, January 17th. The theft or thefts happened sometime in December 2013, or January, 2014. They report that $685.65 in merchandise was stolen in that time period.

In other police news, the Sheldon police report that they arrested 21-year-old Brandon Smigliani of Sheldon on Wednesday, January 22nd. He was arrested on an O’Brien County warrant for Third Degree Theft. Smigliani was taken into custody and transported to jail in Primghar.

The police also report that they cited 21-year-old Zachary Doeden of Sheldon recently on a charge of Public Intoxication.


A Sheldon woman’s SUV and an Ellsworth, Minnesota woman’s car were damaged in an accident on Tuesday, January 21st.

The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 6:00 PM, 57-year-old Gail Geiser of Sheldon was eastbound in the NCC Parking Lot in a 2012 Dodge SUV. A Dodge Charger owned by
Judith Meester of Ellsworth, MN was parked southbound in the lot.

Geiser pulled into a parking space, and then realized it was a handicap spot, so she backed up to park in the next spot. As she backed up, she backed into the parked Meester vehicle.

Geiser’s Dodge SUV received $100 damage. Meester’s Dodge Charger received $1800 damage.

There were no injuries reported.


A Sheldon man’s Toyota and a Sheldon woman’s SUV were damaged in an accident on Wednesday, January 22nd in Sheldon.

The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 4:10 PM, 79-year-old Richard Engelhardt of Sheldon was driving a 2003 Toyota. Twenty-seven-year-old Griselda Bautista of Sheldon was driving a 2007 GMC SUV.

Both vehicles were backing up into the street and backed into each other in the 700 block of 11th Street.

Engelhardt’s Toyota received $200 damage. Bautista’s GMC SUV received $2000 damage.

There were no injuries reported.


Two vehicles were damaged in an accident on Thursday, January 23rd in Sheldon.

The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 5:10 PM, 23-year-old Phillip Altman of Luverne, Minnesota was driving a 2007 Chevy. A 2004 Jeep owned by Gary Bernhardt was parked on Elm Court.

Altman was backing away from the Christian Retirement Home and backed into the Jeep.

The vehicles each received $2000 in damage.

There were no injuries reported.

Altman was charged with unsafe backing.
