Sheldon Police Take Report Of $20,000 Damage To Railroad Signal Among Recent Reports

The police report that they arrested 49-year-old Marc Jon Muhlbauer of Sheldon on Tuesday, October 1st. He was charged with Public Intoxication, with an enhanced penalty. He was taken into custody and transported to jail in Primghar.

Sheldon officers also arrested 41-year-old Chad Traux of Truman, Iowa on Thursday, October 3rd. He was picked up on a warrant out of Emmet County on an original charge of Fifth Degree Theft and a Cerro Gordo County Warrant on an original charge of Driving While Barred. He was also charged with Operating While Intoxicated.


A Union Pacific Railroad Signal sustained severe damage when its crossing arm tangled with a farm tractor on Wednesday, October 2 in Sheldon.

The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 3:55 PM, 56-year-old Mary Murphy of Sheldon was eastbound on Highway 18, driving a tractor pulling two grain wagons.

Murphy said that as she was going over the railroad tracks near the new Casey’s, the crossing arm came down, striking the tractor’s smoke stack. The report says that somehow the railroad signal pole was knocked off its base.

Murphy’s tractor was not damaged, but there was $20,000 damage to the railroad signal, owned by Union Pacific.

There were no injuries reported.

No charges were filed.


A Sanborn man’s pickup and a Sheldon woman’s car were damaged in an accident on Friday, October 4 in Sheldon.

The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 9:00 AM, 37-year-old Benjamin Reitsma of Sanborn was westbound on Highway 18 in a 2004 Ford pickup. Sixty-four-year-old Gayle Roelfs of Sheldon was eastbound on 18 in a 1998 Buick.

Roelfs attempted a left turn and felt hurried by a non-contact vehicle coming up and around on her right. She made a left turn to the north in Reitsma’s path.

Reitsma’s Ford pickup received $500 damage. Roelfs’s Buick received $2000 damage.

There were no injuries reported.

Roelfs was charged with Failure To Yield on Left Turn.


A Bigelow man’s SUV was damaged in an accident on Saturday, October 5 in Sheldon.

The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 6:10 PM, a 2010 Chevy Impalla was properly parked in the new Casey’s parking lot facing southbound, and the driver was inside. Thirty-four-year-old Jason Tuin was parked next to the Suburban and backing out in a 1993 Chevy Suburban.

The report says that as Tuin turned, the front of his vehicle struck the front and rear doors of the parked car.

The parked car received $1800 damage. Tuin’s Chevy Suburban received $500 damage.

There were no injuries reported.

No charges were filed.
