Sheldon School Board Hears from Elementary ESL Students at Monday Board Meeting

The Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education saw a presentation by several members of the East Elementary ESL (English as a Second Language) program at their meeting Monday night.

The students each spoke about the program and how important it was to them. A few parents of ESL students spoke, as well, expressing their gratitude to the Board for the ESL program.

In other action, the Board made a presentation to Barry Whitsell, honoring his late wife, Joan’s, 26 years of service to the District.

The Board received an update from Superintendent Robin Spears on the status of the East Elementary Building Project.  Spears told the Board that the KIDS Committee has narrowed their focus down to two different options for an addition to the existing elementary building, and that they are scheduled to meet next week for further discussion.

Spears also told the Board that he has been in contact with Northwest Iowa Community College about the possibility of having the College’s Heavy Equipment students perform the dirt work on the proposed new ball fields/recreation area.  Spears says the College wants to do the work, and that by having the students perform the work, the school would see some substantial cost savings.

In other business, the Board approved one open enrollment application, which would caause one current Sheldon Community Schools student to enroll out of the District into the Sibley-Ocheyedan District for the remainder of this school year.  They also voted to accept the resignation of Eric Maassen as 9th Grade Baseball Coach, contingent on the District being able to find a suitable replacement for the 2013 Baseball season.  They also approved a contract with Kory Roos as Middle School Wrestling Coach, Tracy Gorter as Cheerleading Sponsor, and Ben Peake as 9th Grade Wrestling Coach.

The Board also designated Kecia Hickman and Glen Goedken, along with Superintendent Spears, as the District’s Negotiation Team for contract negotiations.  They also approved a resolution to consider participating in the Instructional Program.  Spears told the Board that the current instructional Support Levy is set to expire on June 30, 2013.  Due to a scheduling conflict on the regular date for the December Board Meeting, the School Board scheduled the regular December meeting for 7:00 p.m. Monday December 10th, with the Instructional Support Levy Resolution Hearing set for 7:45 p.m. that evening.  That December meeting will be held in the Sheldon High School Library.
