Sheldon, IA — The Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education approved a handful of employment contracts at their regular monthly meeting Monday evening, including the contract for a new Activities Director to replace Mike Niece, who is resigning at the end of the school year.
Justin Albers will fill that position, at a salary of $65,000 for the next school year. In other action, the Board accepted Albers’s resignation from his current teaching and coaching position. They also approved contracts with Chris Walker as Middle School Baseball Coach at $1,874, Ben Chestnut as High School Physical Education/Health Teacher and Weightlifting Coach/Coordinator at a salary of $42,167, Beth Langton as High School Spanish Teacher at $51,086, Amber Van Kekerix as Elementary Office Clerical at $11.00 per hour, and Karol Eggers as the Elementary Principal’s Secretary at $11.60 per hour.
The Board accepted the resignation of Kelly Slagter as Title I Reading Teacher, in addition to Albers’ resignation.
The Board was treated to a pair of videos from the High School Band and Choir’s Florida Trip. One video featured the Sheldon Orab Band and Choir each providing a soundtrack for a different scene from “The Lion King”.
Coach Claude Struve and members of the 2013 Iowa Class 2A Champion Orab Basketball Team appeared before the Board, and presented them with a plaque from the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
The Board recognized a trio of retiring employees; Coach Struve, Lori Cannoy and Deb Ten Clay.
They also approved a Lawn Care Contract for this summer with Jeff’s Lawn Care, at a cost of $10.00 per hour, with a total estimated annual cost of $20,625.
The Board had originally been scheduled to take up the proposed salary adjustments for the District’s administrators, but that was tabled pending completion of the Superintendent’s evaluation process.
The Board set Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00 pm as the date and time for the selling of the capital notes for the East Elementary Renovation/Building project. They also plan to finalize a contract for the project with the firm of Cannon-Moss-Brygger at that time.
Again, that Special Meeting will be held Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00 pm in the Sheldon High School Library.
