Sheldon School Board Votes To Spend Over $37,000 For Technology Upgrade

Sheldon High SchoolSheldon, IA — At their meeting Wednesday evening, the Sheldon Community School Board Of Education approved the expenditure of more than $37,000 to upgrade the District’s email server and the high school’s wireless network.

The cost of the new exchange server, which will handle all of the District’s email,is just over $17,000, while the wireless upgrade portion of the expenditure is just over $20,750.  High School Principal Matt Meendering told the Board that the wireless upgrade is necessary due to the tremendous increase in wireless devices that are used in the high school building.  R&D Industries of Milford will be the vendor supplying the upgraded equipment.

In other action, the Board held a public hearing on the East Elementary Building Project.  Superintendent Spears told the Board that no verbal or written comments had been received from the public.  Superintendent Spears told the Board that there is a Pre-Construction Meeting with perspective contractors scheduled for July 15th, bids will be opened  at noon on July 25th, and that he hopes to be able to award a bid for the project at a Special Board Meeting at noon on Monday, July 29th.

Spears also reported to the Board that the preliminary demolition work for the ball field/recreation complex has been completed.  He said that the NCC students are scheduled to start the dirt work within the next couple of weeks.  He said he is in the process of scheduling a meeting with the City of Sheldon to put together a final draft of specifications for the ball fields, concession/restroom/storage area, and the green spaces.  He said those specs would then be presented to both the City Council and the School Board before moving forward with the bid process to complete the project.

In other action, the Board heard a report from Ron Rensink of Perspective Insurance on the District’s Property & Casualty Insurance coverage,  accepted the resignations of a pair of Instructional Associates, approved contracts for an Assistant High School Football Coach, Middle School Boy’s Basketball Coach, 9th Grade Boy’s Basketball Coach, and a part-time Special Education Instructional Associate, along with other routine items of business, before adjourning into Closed Session to conduct the Superintendent Evaluation.
