Sheldon Woman Killed In Sunday Morning Traffic Crash

1050F 05052013Sheldon, IA — A Sheldon woman has died, and two Sheldon men were injured as the result of a two-vehicle head-on crash Sunday morning in Sheldon.

The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened about 8:45 Sunday morning, when a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer SUV, driven by 24-year old Justin Hassebroek of Sheldon, was westbound on Highway 18, just east of the Sheldon Hy-Vee.  Troopers say that Hassebroek fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with an eastbound 2011 Suzuki SX4, driven by 83-year old Joan VanRooyen of Sheldon.

Hassebroek and a passenger in his SUV, 23-year old Justin Mulder of Sheldon, were transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by SCAT.  Troopers described Hassebroek’s injuries as “non-life threatening”, and Mulder’s injuries were described as “serious”.

Killed in the crash was the driver of the Suzuki, 83-year old Joan VanRooyen of Sheldon.

The Iowa State Patrol investigated the crash, and were assisted at the scene by officers from the Sheldon Police Department and the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, as well as Sheldon Fire/Rescue, the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team, and the Sheldon EMA.
