Spencer, IA – My name is Matt Block and I am announcing my intention to run for the Republican nomination for sheriff of Osceola County. I believe I will make a great sheriff for the people of Osceola County. I pledge to serve them with the highest professionalism, integrity, and honesty. If elected, I commit to be a sheriff that will be fair, dedicated, will uphold the laws of Iowa, and respect the Constitutional freedoms of all the county’s citizens. My benchmark is to be a sheriff that will apply the law equally to all, showing no favoritism.

I was born and raised in Sibley and graduated from Sibley-Ocheyedan High School in 1998. My wife Crystal and I have been married 13 years and would love to come back home to raise our six children and give them the same roots and morals that we were brought up with.

My dream as a child was always to become a peace officer; I started that dream as a jailer at the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office in 2001. In 2002, I accepted a position as a patrolman for the Sanborn Police Department and in January 2004 graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. After serving Sanborn for 3 years, I joined the Spencer Police Dept in 2005, where I’m currently employed. With my ten years experience and knowledge of the job, I’m confident I can also perform the job cost effectively for the people of Osceola County.

If elected, one improvement I would like to implement is to place myself into the patrol rotation with my officers (especially evenings) in an effort to reduce any over-time costs to the county. Also, Buena Vista County and Cherokee County don’t patrol 24 hours per day. I’d like to survey even more counties, then research this and see if it’s something we could implement to reduce costs in Osceola County, while still having an officer on call and able to respond quickly to the few late night needs.

With my experience, help from the current staff and by seeking advice from current and past Sheriffs that I have professional acquaintance with, I’m confident I will get the job done right.

Again, I pledge to be a sheriff for all the people of Osceola County. I would appreciate your support on June 5. Thank you.
