South Dakota Man Now Charged In Iowa After Three-County Chase

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A police pursuit that started in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, came into Lyon County, Iowa, and ended in Lincoln County, South Dakota, has resulted in four felony charges in Lyon County for a South Dakota man.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has filed charges against 34-year-old Tyson Shawn Wessels of Chancellor, SD. The charges are Eluding, Possession of Stolen Property, Assualt on a Peace Officer, and Assault While Participating in a Felony. All four charges are Class D Felonies.

The charges stem from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office receiving a request from the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office for assistance in a pursuit on Friday, August 17. Minnehaha County was pursuing a stolen pickup that went into Iowa. With the help of GPS the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office located the pickup parked on Birch Avenue near 220th Street. When a Deputy approached the pickup the driver backed into his patrol car. A pursuit followed and the driver — Wessels — was apprehended in Lincoln County, South Dakota.

He is charged in Minnehaha County with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and third degree burglary. He faces charges in Lincoln County as well.
