Spalding Catholic Schools In Granville Considering Possible Merger With Gehlen Catholic In Le Mars
Date posted - September 7, 2012
Granville, Iowa — A decline in enrollment at Spalding Catholic Schools has forced the school board to consider merging their high school with Gehlen Catholic High School in Le Mars.
Spalding officials say the proposed merger could be complete by the fall of 2013. Right now, the proposal is for both schools to keep their own pre-K through eighth grade programs, and for students to attend high school in Le Mars.
The schools are about 26 miles apart, and both are a part of the Sioux City Diocese.
Enrollment at Spalding is only 58 percent of what it was 10 years ago, from 285 in 2002 to 167 this year. The high school enrollment is 83 percent of what it was — from 84 to 70 students.
Football is already a shared program, and some faculty are shared as well.
Hearings about the merger are planned October 17th in Granville and November 7th in Le Mars. The final decision is expected in January.
