Spencer Teen Injured, Transported By Helicopter To Sioux Falls Hospital After Bike Accident

avera mckennan careflight new helicopterSpencer, Iowa — A Spencer teen was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital after an accident on Friday in Spencer.

The Spencer Police Department reports that about 9:55 AM, 61-year-old James Mingus of Spencer was driving a truck eastbound on West Eighth Street. Eighteen-year-old Jonathan Ferguson was northbound on First Avenue West on a bicycle.

The report says Ferguson ran the stop sign and struck the passenger side of the truck. The bicycle Ferguson was riding was a stunt bike and did not have any working brakes.

Ferguson was taken to the Spencer Hospital and later transported by helicopter to a Sioux Falls hospital. His injuries were reported as critical.

Mingus was not injured.

The investigation continues.

The Spencer Fire Department and the Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene.
