Suicide Awareness Walk Held Saturday In Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — More than 200 people were on hand Saturday afternoon for a Suicide Awareness Walk in Sheldon. The 2nd Annual “Breaking The Silence” Suicide Awareness Walk/Run provided emotional support, and an outlet for those who have been affected by suicide. An estimated quarter-million people each year become suicide survivors, and for every successful suicide there an estimated 25 attempts.

The event took place at the Sheldon Middle School, and included talks from people who shared the stories of suicides that touched them and their families. Participants then retired to the high school track to walk or run laps as a way to symbolically raise awareness of suicide.

Multiple pastors were on hand to pray with individuals who have been touched by suicide.

The event concluded with the participants adjourning to the middle school parking lot, and releasing balloons in honor of those who have been lost to suicide.

More than 38-thousand Americans die by suicide every year. That’s 105 Americans a day, or one person every 12 minutes. In the U.S. suicide rates are highest during the spring. Suicide is the leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year olds, and second for 24 to 35-year olds.
