At 9:15 pm its already dark. County roads are narrow and dark. The motorcycle probably didn’t even see them until it was too late. Very unfortunate!
What are they doing on the road at that hour? Did any have a light projecting to the rear on their bikes? Don’t understand people who ride on the county roads like this, especially when it is getting dark out. Hazard on the roadway.
A person can ride their bike any time they want. Yes, they have to have lights at night but even a reflector could be seen. With 5 bikes the chance that they did not have anything is slim to none. The people powered bikes have the same rights to any county road as a gas powered bike. Drivers of gas powered vehicles are more of a hazard than anything else.
I agree completely. I am a avid biker and I know that drivers can be very disrespectful, often seeing how fast and close to the bicycle they can get. It is completely lawful to be not only on the side of the road, but also their entire half of the road, the same as a car. It is fortunate that no one was killed; however these injuries will affect them for the rest of their lives. I also know that the Lyon County is a very biker unfriendly area. Recently while riding down a highway (completely legal) at 1 in the afternoon I was stopped and harassed by an officer 4 times within 5 miles. Despite cars cussing at me and cutting me off the officer pulled me over. Fortunately I was not arrested because I was within every letter of the law.
I would also like to mention that according the the Iowa Department of Transportation bicycle map distributed by the state of Iowa, K52 is a designated bicycle friendly route as is the road in question in the a fore mentioned incident.
K52 Runs directly through the east side of Rock Rapids – is it simply your conclusion that these young ladies were outside of town? You can see a small animal on the road – even on a motorcycle at night – spotting 5 bicyclists should not have been an issue.
I would say this was estimated time. I was to the hospital by 9:25 and the helicopter landed as I arrived. People, don’t judge when you don’t know everything!
The police report would be fairly accurate on the time. Dispatch would record the exact time they were called about the accident. I am praying for the girls involved in the accident as well as the motorcycle rider. That being said there was no reason the girls should have been riding their bikes on a county road at night.
“That being said”-lets remember that the families will read this and is this really necessary? Don’t judge either these girls or the driver.
I mean no disrespect. I only meant it is not fair to blame the motorcyclist solely for this accident as I have heard so many do already. The girls, the driver, and the families are all in my prayers.
It’s just a very unfortunate accident and Sandi, if one of these girls are your family or friend then please know that I am very sorry. Everyone is in my thoughts and prayers!!
Yes, one of the girls is my niece. That is why they call them accidents.
Just a “quesstamation” but I’m thinking the girls probably didn’t get back into town before it got dark as it gets dark sooner now. Doesn’t make any difference~it happened. We are not the ones who should judge or place blame. Thank the Good Lord that no life was lost!!
Boy, people can throw judgement right away….Please put yourself in either the bicyclist or motorcyclist shoes for a moment. Would you want people to place judgement on you? It’s people who judge that probably have many faults of their own that they should think about. We are all human and make mistakes. Remember that their is only one judge in all our lives and he even forgives.
I ride both bicycle and motorcycle and know that things can happen very fast. Many people lose their lives on both throughout the year due to a number of things and it’s fortunate that no one lost their lives in this accident.
I know the families of the girls in the hospital and want them to know I’m praying for them to have a safe and speedy recovery.
