Three Vehicle Accident At Hwy’s 18 & 71 Send Two To Hospital Friday Morning

Date posted - June 15, 2012

A three-vehicle accident sent two motorists to the hospital and totalled two vehicles in a midday crash that occured at the intersection of Highways 18 and 71 near Spencer Friday. This is the second accident this week at that intersection, the latest since a Sanborn woman was killed Monday in the same spot.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reports that a 2000 Chevy K-1500 pickup truck pulling a boat and trailer was traveling southbound on highway 71 was broadsided by a 2000 Dodge Stratus driven by 95-year-old Elva Dau of Hartley.

The Dau vehicle attempted to cross over Highway 71 on to Highway 18 west when she struck the truck and trailer driven by 20-year-old Jason Opperman of Manning, IA. As a result of the impact, the Opperman truck and trailer spun out of control and struck a 2000 Buick Century driven by 52-year-old Karen Postma of Paullina.

Both Dau and Postma were transported to Spencer Municipal Hospital with minor injuries. The Dau Stratus was a complete loss, as was Oppenman’s boat. The Opperman pickup sustained $10,000 in damage and the Postma Buick sustained $2,500 in damage.

Dau was cited for failure to yield upon left turn and Postma was cited for failure to provide security against liability (accident related).

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Spencer Fire and Rescue, Fostoria Fire Department and the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
